Jancis R’s note from 2006:
Still a lively dense crimson. Some sweetness still on the nose. Rich and full and really most impressive! This is definitely one of the good 1964s. Full and rich and meaty with a neat finish and not fading at all fast even if it is at the peak of its powers now. Fresh vital finish. Pretty impressive. Will the red Bordeaux being made today last as long as 30 years, I wonder?

A magnum, bought in 2011 from Benchmark’s “100 Year Cellar” collection. Low neck fill. On opening, light but pleasant, no faults, and surprisingly young in appearance and taste. With time in decanter and glass, this really opened up and revealed a lot more fruit. A pleasant surprise.

This was a perfect bottle (strange BBR bottling) – very clean and crisp without any funk at all. Recurrent with only a touch of cedar, tobacco and graphite. Didn’t taste like a 50yr old wine. Really enjoyable and far better than suggested by other CT reviews. Actually reminded me a bit of the 85 Gruaud Larose we had a few hours later. Just lacked depth and complexity. 93-94pts
