Parker’s latest note from 2009:

“A massive wine that is clearly of first-growth quality in this vintage, the 1982 Gruaud Larose remains a youngster. A broodingly dense, thick, unctuously textured, inky/plum/garnet/purple color offers up scents of beef blood, steak tartare, cassis, herbs, tobacco, and underbrush. One of the most concentrated wines of the vintage (as well as one of the most concentrated Bordeaux’s I have ever tasted), it is a huge, full-bodied, weighty, rich wine whose tannins are getting silkier and silkier. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life. This behemoth is a singularly profound example of Gruaud Larose that continues to justify its legendary status. Anticipated maturity: now-2050.”

Neal Martin’s slightly later note from 2012:

“Tasted at Pebbles/Zachy’s 1982 dinner in Hong Kong. I have lost count how many times I have not only tasted this wine, but how many times that I have enjoyed it. Here, this bottle is a little more backward and Pauillac-like in style with vibrant black fruit, crushed stone and a little burnt toast. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. It is beautifully balanced with the vivacity and outgoing personality of Leoville Poyferre ’82. There are lovely tobacco and cooked meat notes towards the long, persistent finish. I have written several times how damn delicious this Gruaud is – so don’t let me bore you again. Tasted November 2012.”

Average Cellartracker score of 94.7 pts from nearly 500 tasting notes.

10/27/2019 – Francophile1 Likes this wine: 96 Points

Second showing of this wine in this line up tonight. Now this bottle is everything I love about ‘82 Gruaud. A powerhouse wine every bit as good as the ‘82 first growths. If you are like me and like a touch of brett, damp forest floor, and layers of complexity that you can peel back one at a time, you will love this wine. Decanted for 3 hours.
