This is a very successful vintage for Haut-Bailly and the flavours and potential is only now starting to reveal itself. A youthful, beautifully crafted red with cedar, cassis and blackberry flavours. Balanced, harmonious with supple, firm tannins that carries the flavours through to the finish. This wine will easily age for a few more decades.
Neal Martin’s latest Wine Advocate review from 2016:
Tasted at the château, the 1998 Haut-Bailly is a wine that exploits what was a fine vintage in Pessac-Léognan, and appears to slowly improve with age. Having not reached adulthood yet, it has a simmering, powerful bouquet with smoke and truffle accompanying the red berry fruit, perhaps a little mintier than previous bottles. The palate is complex and well balanced, harmonious with kirsch and bay leaf, you could say “modestly precocious” in style. The acidity cuts through nicely here, lending freshness on the finish that feels long and possesses the substance to suggest that it will easily bestow drinkers with another 15-20 years of pleasure. You could broach this now, but it possesses the concentration to mature over the next 20 years without problem. Tasted March 2016.

One of my favorite ‘recent’ Haut Bailly vintages and one of the very best value. On plateau of maturity, showing lots of tertiary and tobacco notes, a lovely rich mouthfeel and red fruit. From double-mag this really sparkled and stood above the other vintages enjoyed alongside (96, 08, 12). 94pts technically, but enjoyed this even more. Drink now-2025

Solid, in early drinking window. Shows some smoke and cocoa with some mild leather notes. Palate is mostly darker fruit profile, I suspect from the merlot. Some vanilla notes on the backend otherwise everything in balance and coming together nicely. Tannins are pretty mild at this stage.
