RP’s latest note from 2010:
Between 1978 and 2007, this 1998 is the greatest Vieux Telegraphe that was produced. It has taken a good decade for this wine to shed its tannins and come out of a dormant, closed period. It has finally emerged, and notes of iodine, seaweed, black currants, incense, and sweet cherries as well as hot rocks jump from the glass of this full-bodied, powerful wine. It possesses considerable elegance and purity, along with loads of raspberries and incense, in a round, juicy, rich style that is just emerging from the closet. The wine is still youthful and a pre-adolescent in terms of its ultimate evolution. Approachable now, it will continue to evolve for another 15-20 years. Bravo!

Nose had some funk at first. Blew off after 30 minutes or so. Rich tart cherry, raspberry fruit. Definite herbs de Provence, garrigue, clean line of acidity. The wine is rich and savory. You could sip this all night and be very happy. Drink now or leave for a few more years. The tannins will keep this going for awhile longer. I have two more of the ‘98s and am looking forward to enjoying them.

The 1998 is a long-time favorite. We opened it to celebrate my son’s 22nd birthday and, like him, the wine has matured and softened and is more complex. The prominent tannins of its first ten or twelve years have evened out, providing structure but not dominating. The acids remain balanced as always. It is the bouquet that has exploded – sweet cherry and plum burst out of the glass. I rated this 95 but, honestly, I’m not sure I’ve enjoyed a better bottle of CDP ever. Such a gorgeous wine.

At a perfect spot right now, and can last a few more years in the cellar, but I would drink up. Really nice overall. Medium body, balanced tannins. Garrigue, pepper, eucalyptus, quince paste, fig jam. Long finish. Can’t go wrong with this one. Wonderful.
