Opened 4 hrs in front. Perfume, vanilla, nice oak. Great Rioja. Will look for some more.

PnP. Inky violet, red tint. Nose of tar, dark berries and some herby spices. Palate still not quite inviting as it features heavy-handed almost thick fruit and balancing grainy tannins. On the plus side, the fruit is not raisiny or pruny and seems almost fresh (a saving dose of acidity). I would also say the wine is fairly balanced. Not complex nor finesseful and, while this wine is nowhere near fading, I doubt that age will add much character.

This was a definite improvement over my previous tasting back in 2004. The wine has had time to knit together and is more focused. Still big and I can see it improving further. Cherries and cassis, with softening tannins. Better after an hour.

Occasional tasting group: Extensive Top Spain tasting. (@ PVa): The bouquet is still a bit locked, although there are ripe cassis and cherries. On the palate there are lots of tastes in this concentrated wine. Earthy, leather, a lot of cassis and cherries, tobacco, chocolate and a hint of sweetness. Very soft, but still youthful tannin. Given enough air this is a beauty now, but waiting for another 5 years or so will be no problem.
