Description

No reserve on this auction.

The 2003 vintage was a spectacular success for Domaine du Colombier’s Hermitage.

Jancis R spotted the potential early, writing this in 2004: “Very exciting wine. Florent Viale’s name may have been made by Crozes but this Hermitage, made in tiny quantities from a 1.5 ha plot in Beaumes, is fascinating. At the moment a bit pinched and taut with some carbon dioxide and quite a bit of acidity on show at the moment but majesty lurks underneath it all.”

The potential has now been fulfilled. Here are some recent Cellartracker notes:

Well, this took me by surprise. It is actually fantastic! It is mature but definitely not overripe. There’s tertiary notes intertwined with fresh red and dark fruits. For a 2003 wine, the acid is quite pronounced and balances the fruit almost perfectly. Notes of rusty iron nails and coagulated blood on the nose, raspberry and blackberry and white pepper on the palate where tannins are fully integrated and resolved. You can tell this is Northern Rhone, it’s got quite a bit of sense of place. Can’t wait for my next bottle. This was quite a treat.

Opened and slow ox for a few hours while cooking Sunday dinner. Color is dark not showing any signs of age. Nose was old world with some funk and tobacco, with some minerality that I couldn’t place, that eventually blew off. Taste was classic Northern Rhone Syrah, big and burly with some spices added in. After about two hours this was drinking very smooth and all flavors came together nicely. I left a little for the second day but only had time for a sip before I had leave for the week so really didn’t get a chance to evaluate. At the current price on winebid I am glad I bought 6. This will hold up nicely for a bunch of years

Incredible nose of French horse stable, sultry fruit, fresh rain, and cinnamon. Masculine spice collides with saddle leather. Stemmy fruit with a ton of garrigue. Complex and beautiful. Very long finish. I’m pretty blown away by this.
